Drum

Removal

When releasing tension from parking brake cables, use only hand tools.
1. Remove front floor console.
2. Ensure that parking brake lever is in fully released position.
3. Release tension from parking brake cables. Loosen adjusting nut (1) completely to end of front cable threaded rod, Fig. 1.
4. Remove rear seat lower cushion.
5. Remove rear carpet retainers.
6. Position carpet forward in order to access rear parking brake cables and body pass-thru grommets.
7. With parking brake lever in released position, release appropriate rear parking brake cable end (3) from cable equalizer, Fig. 2.
8. Release rear cable fitting (2) from park brake lever bracket (1) and remove cable from lever assembly, Fig. 2.
9. Release rear park brake cable body pass-thru grommet.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. If park brake cable is being reused, release tab on underbody retainer (2) and remove park brake cable from retainer, Fig. 3.
12. If a new parking brake cable will be installed, release underbody retainer (2) from vehicle underbody, Fig. 3.
13. Carefully pry against edge of C-shaped retainer (1) on parking brake cable, to release retainer from bracket at rear axle trailing arm pivot. Do not pull on parking brake cable to release C-shaped retainer (1) on cable from bracket at rear axle trailing arm pivot, Fig. 4.
14. Remove cable from opening in vehicle underbody.
15. Remove rear tire and wheel assembly.
16. Remove brake drum.
17. Depress visible retaining tab (1) on parking brake cable fitting and tilt released side of cable end back into backing plate using a flat-bladed screwdriver or equivalent, Fig. 5.
18. Rotate parking brake cable to expose other retaining tab.
19. Depress remaining retaining tab on park brake cable fitting, and release cable fitting from backing plate using a flat-bladed screwdriver or equivalent.
20. Move majority of cable return spring back through opening in backing plate.
21. Push cable toward rear of vehicle, just enough to clear cable end from slot on parking brake lever.
22. Lift cable to fully release cable from lever and remove cable using a flat-bladed screwdriver or equivalent.

Installation

1. Insert parking brake cable through cable bracket on caliper. Only install cable return spring to just rearward of spring positioning tab on backing plate.
2. Push cable toward rear of vehicle, along outside of trailing brake shoe, until cable end is positioned just past slot on parking brake lever.
3. While holding cable in position from front to rear, move cable end to back of parking brake lever.
4. Press cable down into slot on lever, then pull cable toward front of vehicle to secure cable end to slot.
5. While continuing to pull cable away from lever, insert a flat-bladed screwdriver into opening on lever to prevent cable from lifting out of slot on lever.
6. Move cable return spring through opening in backing plate.
7. Secure cable fitting to backing plate. Attempt to pull parking brake cable free of backing plate, to ensure that retaining tabs (1) on fitting are properly secured, Fig. 5.
8. Adjust rear drum brakes.
9. Install brake drum.
10. Install rear tire and wheel assembly.
11. Insert cable through opening in vehicle underbody.
12. Install C-shaped retainer (1) on parking brake cable into bracket at rear axle trailing arm pivot, Fig. 6.
13. Install and secure parking brake cable pass-thru grommet (1) to opening in vehicle underbody, Fig. 3.
14. If a new parking brake cable is being installed, secure underbody retainer (2) to vehicle underbody, Fig. 3.
15. If parking brake cable is being reused, install parking brake cable to underbody retainer (2) and press tab into place to secure, Fig. 3.
16. Lower vehicle.
17. Secure cable fitting to parking brake lever bracket. To ensure retaining tabs on fitting are properly secured, attempt to pull parking brake cable free of lever bracket.
18. Position parking brake cable equalizer (1) to parking brake lever integral retention tabs, Fig. 6.
19. Insert rear parking brake cables (2) into slots in parking brake cable equalizer. Ensure rear parking brake cables are fully engaged and seated at bottom of equalizer slots, Fig. 6.
20. Install carpet in original position and install rear carpet retainers, Fig. 7.
21. Install rear seat lower cushion.
22. Adjust parking brake cable tension.
23. Install front floor console.

Removal

When releasing tension from parking brake cables, use only hand tool.
1. Remove front floor console.
2. Ensure that parking brake lever is in fully released position.
3. Release tension from parking brake cables. Loosen adjusting nut (1) completely to end of front cable threaded rod, Fig. 1.
4. Remove rear seat lower cushion.
5. Remove rear carpet retainers.
6. Position carpet forward in order to access rear parking brake cables and body pass-thru grommets.
7. With parking brake lever in released position, release appropriate rear parking brake cable end (3) from cable equalizer, Fig. 2.
8. Release rear cable fitting (2) from parking brake lever bracket (1) and remove cable from lever assembly, Fig. 2.
9. Release rear parking brake cable body pass-thru grommet.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. If parking brake cable is being reused, release tab on underbody retainer (2) and remove parking brake cable from retainer, Fig. 8.
12. If a new parking brake cable will be installed, release underbody retainer (2) from vehicle underbody, Fig. 8.
13. Carefully pry against edge of C-shaped retainer (1) on parking brake cable, to release retainer from bracket at rear axle trailing arm pivot. Do not pull on parking brake cable to release C-shaped retainer (1) on cable from bracket at rear axle trailing arm pivot, Fig. 8.
14. Remove cable from opening in vehicle underbody.
15. Remove rear tire and wheel assembly.
16. Release parking brake cable end (1) from caliper parking brake lever.
17. Depress retaining tabs (4), on parking brake cable fitting using a flat-bladed screwdriver and release cable fitting from cable bracket, Fig. 9.
18. Remove parking brake cable guide (3) retaining bolt (2), and remove cable, Fig. 9.

Installation

1. Insert parking brake cable through cable bracket on caliper.
2. Install rear parking brake cable guide (3) retaining bolt (2), Fig. 9.
3. Secure cable fitting to cable bracket. Ensure that retaining tabs (4) are fully seated, Fig. 9.
4. Install cable end (1) to caliper park brake lever, Fig. 9.
5. Install rear tire and wheel assembly.
6. Insert cable through opening in vehicle underbody.
7. Install C-shaped retainer (1) on parking brake cable into bracket at rear axle trailing arm pivot, Fig. 8.
8. Install and secure parking brake cable pass-thru grommet (3) to opening in vehicle underbody, Fig. 8.
9. If a new parking brake cable is being installed, secure underbody retainer (2) to vehicle underbody, Fig. 8.
10. If parking brake cable is being reused, install parking brake cable to underbody retainer (2) and press tab into place to secure, Fig. 8.
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Secure cable fitting (2) to parking brake lever bracket (1). Attempt to pull parking brake cable free of lever bracket, to ensure retaining tabs on fitting are properly secured, Fig. 2.
13. Position parking brake cable equalizer (1) to parking brake lever integral retention tabs, Fig. 6.
14. Insert rear parking brake cables (2) into slots in parking brake cable equalizer. Ensure rear parking brake cables are fully engaged and seated at bottom of equalizer slots, Fig. 10.
15. Install carpet to original position.
16. Install rear carpet retainers, Fig. 7.
17. Install rear seat lower cushion.
18. Adjust parking brake cable tension.
19. Install front floor console.
