Chevrolet Cobalt Service & Repair Manual: Collision Inspection

Accident Regardless of Air Bag Deployment

Proper operation of Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) sensing system requires that any repairs to vehicle structure return vehicle structure to original production configuration. Not properly repairing vehicle structure could cause non-deployment of air bag(s) in a frontal collision or deployment of air bag(s) for conditions less severe than intended.
After any collision, inspect following components as indicated. If you detect any damage, replace component. If you detect any damage to mounting points or mounting hardware, repair component or replace hardware as required.
1. Inspect steering column for bending, twisting, buckling or any type of damage.
2. Inspect knee bolsters for bending, twisting, buckling or any other type of damage.
3. Inspect instrument panel brackets and brace for bending, twisting, buckling or any other type of damage.
4. Perform seat belt operational and functional inspection.
5. Inspect instrument panel cross vehicle beam for bending, twisting, buckling or any other type of damage.
6. Inspect instrument panel mounting points and brackets for bending, twisting, buckling or any other type of damage.
7. Inspect seats and seat mounting points for bending, twisting, buckling or any other type of damage.
8. Inspect roof and headliner mounting points.
9. Inspect brake pedal for bending, twisting, buckling or any type of damage.

Accident w/Frontal Air Bag Deployment

Component Replacement

After a collision involving air bag deployment, replace following components:
1. Driver steering wheel air bag.
2. Passenger instrument panel air bag, if deployed.
3. Air bag control module, if DTC B0052 has been set and will not clear.
4. Front and/or side impact sensors.
5. Driver/passenger seat side air bag, if deployed.
6. Seat back cover if side seat air bag is deployed.
7. Driver/passenger seat belt anchor and/or retractor pretensioners.

Component Inspection

Perform additional inspections on following components:
1. Inspect steering wheel air bag coil and coil wiring pigtail for melting, scorching or other damage due to excessive heat.
2. Inspect mounting points or mounting hardware for passenger instrument panel air bag, steering wheel air bag, air bag control module, seat side air bag (if deployed) and seat belt anchor and/or retractor pretensioners for any damage and repair or replace each component as required.

Accident w/Side Seat Air Bag Deployment

Component Replacement

After a collision involving driver/passenger side seat air bag deployment, replace following components:
1. Left/right side impact sensors on side of impact.
2. Left/right roof rail air bag on side of impact.
3. Air bag control module, if DTC B0052 has been set and will not clear.
4. Inflatable restraint seat belt anchor and/or retractor pretensioner.
5. Driver or passenger seat back cushion cover replacement.
6. Do not repair or replace seat stitching or seams in seat back trim cover with an internal mounted seat side air bag module. Replace complete seat back trim cover.

Component Inspection

Perform additional inspections on following components:
1. Inspect mounting points or mounting hardware for side impact sensors and driver/passenger side seat air bags on side of impact for any damage and repair or replace each component as required.
2. Inspect mounting points, mounting hardware, headliner and trim pieces for left/right roof rail air bag on side of impact for any damage and repair or replace each component as required.
3. Inspect mounting points or mounting hardware for air bag control module and seat belt anchor and/or retractor pretensioners for any damage and repair or replace each component as required.
4. Inspect seat cushion frame.
5. Inspect seat recliner and cover, if equipped.
6. Inspect seat adjuster.
7. Inspect seat back frame.
8. Inspect door trim assembly.
9. Inspect impacted seat cushion side covers and switches.

Accident w/Seat Belt Pretensioner Deployment Only

Component Replacement

After a collision involving driver/passenger seat belt retractor or anchor pretensioner deployment, replace following components:
1. Driver and passenger inflatable restraint seat belt anchor pretensioner and/or retractor pretensioner.
2. Air bag control module, if DTC B0052 has been set and will not clear.

Component Inspection

Perform additional inspections for any damage and repair or replace each component as required on following components.
1. Inspect mounting points or mounting hardware for air bag control module.
2. Inspect mounting points or mounting hardware for seat belt anchor pretensioners.
3. Inspect mounting points or mounting hardware for seat belt retractor pretensioners.

Impact Sensor Replacement Guidelines

The impact sensor replacement policy requires replacing sensors in area of accident damage. Area of accident damage is defined as portion of vehicle which is crushed, bent or damaged due to a collision. An example of this would be a moderate collision where front of vehicle impacts a object. If vehicle has an impact sensor mounted forward of radiator, it must be replaced.
1. Replace impact sensor whether or not air bags have deployed.
2. Replace impact sensor even if it appears to be undamaged.
3. Impact sensor damage which is not visible, such as slight bending of mounting bracket or cuts in wire insulation, can cause improper operation of SIR system. Do not try to determine whether impact sensor is undamaged, replace impact sensor. Also, if DTC indicates a fault impact sensor, replace impact sensor.
